Im wondering if anyone else does this... When there is snow and ice on the ground I find myself inducing a slide when going around turns, not because its fun (although it is, hehe), but because its easier than actually trying to turn in those conditions.

I do it in the rain with the Dieselrado. I did it in the snow with the Infiniti I used to own.
Throttle induced rotation is fun. More fun with more truck.

As long as the front wheels continue to point in the right direction, it tends to work out okay. Usually.

I often initiated a small slide on off-camber corners to prevent understeer with my Galant. Not necessarily because it was fun, but that I was more in control that way.

Yes. Though tbh, if it’s slippery enough for that it’s usually OK to keep 4wd on everywhere but the highway.
I'll still do it in 4wd though.

So what’s the question? It’s a natural thing to do... although if it’s that easy to slide you need better grip. Snow tires?

i do it as practice for those times that it happens unintentionally.

Off camber corners I just take reeeaaaally slow. Getting oppo happens, but it's more due to the fact that I'd just drive into a curb if I didn't.

Im just wondering if anybody else is lazy enough to use oppo instead of actually turning. And its not easy to slide with my General Grabber At2s, I just induce the slide

never had to do this, run proper snow tires and drive to conditions.

You certainly have to turn the steering wheel a lot less. I prefer it. But everybody else around seems to frown on it... Have fun! But be careful.

Not if there are curbs. Not if there are people/other cars around, not if the surface doesn’t at least look uniform. It’s way too easy for a little oppo to turn into a disaster.

Personally I avoid it on public roads. If you do ding someone or crash, insurance is going to call hooligan on you and you will not be covered.

I have owned primarily RWD or 4WD vehicles in my life and I will go around corners sideways all winter. When traffic is clear and there’s no one around, of course. I once got a ticket for getting sideways in a Suzuki Sidekick. The ironic part is that I wasn’t trying to slide on that particular occasion, I just hit a patch of black ice while turning.
I think it’s essential for the RWD driver to know how to control a slide, so I try to get a lot of practice.

I hate ice. But when its something manageable/predictable, like snow or slush, I do this. Nothing crazy, just a little powersteer, executed smoothly without the need for full oppo-lock. If a cop saw me do it, they’d probably think that I ever-so-slightly misjudged the traction, and was struggling for grip just like everybody else.
But the secret is that it’s intentional. It’s fun, and more importantly, it keeps me sharp.

If you have the ability to drive with the throttle then that’s fine but if it goes wrong there’s no one else to blame.
There have been times where I could turn using the throttle because when you're understeering through snow you feel absolutely helpless because your throttle and turn inputs aren't going to do anything (with FWD).

I had to do it a few times last year in the Safari because the front end decided it didn’t want to turn. The M3 does shockingly good in the snow though so I never had to.

Depending on the turn, I do this in any car in the snow. For instance, turning into my old neighborhood from work required a 90 degree right turn from a very busy 45mph (but actually 55-60+) highway. When it snowed, you would usually end up with the main lanes being cleared but the right turn lane being unplowed and the neighborhood street being unplowed. The neighborhood street was also uphill, so it necessitates a small amount of speed to be maintained before the hill unless you risk spinning the tires/getting stuck. What most people did was come to a near complete stop in the main travel lanes and risk getting rear ended by idiot DC area drivers, plow through the turn, then hope they could build enough momentum on the short flat before the uphill section. I would just pull into the still snowy turn lane, and do a little flick/handbrake action in my Focus and glide gracefully sideways through the lane, make the turn, and have enough speed to easily get up the hill.

Winters in Mississippi are basically just fall for an extended time, so never really have a chance to drive in any extreme conditions. We got ice 2 years ago for one night, so I did get to make some icy donuts in the parking lot where I used to work with the 350z I used to have. That counts for something, right?

Yes a lot, I’ve had bald tires for two winters now (long story) and sometimes this was the only effective way to turn on tighter intersections.

Only at very low speeds when there is nobody else on the road.
